Our Memorial Trophies
Mat Garrod
Mat Garrod was an irreverent soul who loved travelling and keeping fit by running and cycling. He worked at the NSW Environment Protection Authority for more than 10 years and contributed much to the protection of the environment of NSW. He was a member of the “Environment Clean Green Runners” team at the Sydney Corporate Cup and inspired the team to a knockout victory in 2008. The Mat Garrod memorial trophy celebrates Mat’s life of 39 years in which he managed to pack in visiting over 50 countries and included finishing the Zurich Marathon in under 4 hours. Mat completed two runs in Series 58 and one in Series 59, with a personal best time of 30:30 minutes set in Series 59 run 1. Mat passed away on 29/08/2007 during run 2, Series 59.

Ron Coombs
Throughout his life, Ron had a great love of sport, being actively involved in many sports including baseball, cricket, swimming and, of course, running. Ron was a true fun runner, in the real sense of the word. Ron proudly wore the Sydney Water Runners’ Club colours in many community fun runs, including the City to Surf, Parramatta 10 Mile, Elouera Half Marathon and Sutherland to Surf, just to mention a few.
Ron was also a keen member of the Sydney Water Sewer Rats Corporate Cup team. Between 1993 and 1995, he ran in six Series 15-18 and 20-21, completing 29 runs in that time. He achieved a personal best time of 25.25 minutes.
In 1986, Ron was named the Sydney Water Runners Club Champion, an Award of which he was tremendously proud. His grit and determination, so often displayed in his running, was to be tested to the full, when Ron became stricken with cancer. Despite the very best efforts of the medical specialists, coupled with Ron’s unwavering determination, Ron died on the 12th April 1996, at St. George Hospital, Kogarah, aged 51.
Ron’s happy, smiling face and cheerful manner, even when the going got really tough, will always be remembered by his fellow runners. In every respect, Ron was a true champion – a champion runner and a champion bloke.
